A secure water supply
Hunua 4 is a new water main project through Manukau and Auckland cities, designed to cater for population growth and to increase the security of the water supply to the Auckland region for the next half century.
Hunua 4 is the biggest water pipeline project undertaken in New Zealand for many years and involves 30km of 1.5-1.9 m-wide steel pipeline crossing the two cities. The pipeline will cross the Manukau Harbour, three motorways, three railway lines, a creek and eight streams.
The NZ$120m project is a Fulton Hogan John Holland Joint Venture (FHJHJV). The project commenced in May 2012 and is scheduled to take four years to complete.
Once completed, the pipeline will be able to carry 250,000m³ of water a day, doubling the existing capacity on the Hunua 3 water main that currently runs up through Otahuhu.
The new water transmission pipeline will run for 28km, from Redoubt North Reservoir in Manukau Heights to Campbell Crescent in Epsom, connecting to the existing local water supply network along the way. Ultimately, the Hunua 4 will extend through the Khyber reservoirs in the central city.
Caring for the community
By building near schools, shops and other public facilities, Fulton Hogan developed good relationships with the communities surrounding the new pipeline and was committed to providing good traffic management, combined with honest and open communication, which kept the community up-to-date with upcoming local works.
