Largest infrastructure project

Majura Parkway is a new, 11.5km dual carriageway, which will seamlessly connect the Federal and Monaro Highways in ACT. Our team at Fulton Hogan is proud to be part of the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in the ACT and look forward to being involved in roadworks that will transform the commute between the north and south side of Canberra.

By 2030, the Majura Parkway is forecast to carry 40,000 vehicles a day, including up to 6,000 heavy vehicles.

The construction of the Majura Parkway, between Fairbairn Avenue and the Federal Highway, is now complete and consists of more than 10km of the 11.5km length of the Parkway. The development includes seven of the project’s 10 bridges.

Facing challenges

One unique challenge faced by our Fulton Hogan team was to build an incrementally-launched 250m twin bridge over the Molonglo River, which will link the new Majura Parkway with the Monaro Highway. To meet this challenge, Fulton Hogan drew from more than 80 years’ experience designing and constructing roads and bridges across Australasia to determine that a pre-cast launch method would be the best solution for this section of the Parkway. The pre-cast launch method allows for a bridge design that reduces the number of bridge piers and enables a single span to cross the majority of the Molonglo River. Each twin bridge will include two lanes, an emergency stop lane on each side, as well as safety barriers and streetlights to help maximise safety and traffic flow.

Safety is Fulton Hogan’s number one priority – for our people, our communities and motorists. Our commitment to this safety focus was evident throughout this project, with, as of October 2014, more than 500,000 man hours involved in the project without a single Lost Time to Injury (LTI).

To complete the project, Fulton Hogan has worked closely with many local stakeholders, including landowners and the Canberra International Airport. Honest and open communication is a huge part of any successful project and our Fulton Hogan team regularly kept all parties informed of the work being carried out in the area – to ensure that all users of the area were kept up-to-date.
