In New Zealand, approximately 15% of the Fulton Hogan workforce identifies as Mãori and there are also many working in the Australian business. With the support of Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry for Mãori Development, Fulton Hogan offers an annual scholarship and leadership program to encourage and develop future leaders amongst our Mãori employees. This year 13 aspiring Mãori leaders were selected as Mãori leadership cadets to participate in the program and to attend the a leadership hui (camp) at the Tongariro National Park. Here the cadets work together to share the vision for Mãori leadership, develop personal skills, set career goals and inspire confidence in each other.
Each cadet is assigned an individual learning plan to help steer them towards their end goal to become an engineer, department manager or senior leader with Fulton Hogan. Using the traditional Mãori mentoring system, which involves holistic development of the person: hinengaro (mind); tinana (body); wairua (spirit); and whanau (family), the cadets are supported by a team of mentors under a framework known as Tuakana-Teina (big brother/sister–little brother/sister) who will help them achieve their goals.
