Project Redevelopment

Swanson Dock, in the Port of Melbourne, is Australia’s largest container port and one of the country’s busiest. Fulton Hogan’s client, DP World, contracted Fulton Hogan to redevelop their West Swanson container intermodal terminal, install new fire and water mains and reconstruct its damaged parking bays.

The redevelopment work included excavation and stabilisation of sub-grade, construction of drainage, water and electrical services, asphalt and post-tension slabs. Our Fulton Hogan team worked closely with our valued clients and provided a solution that maximised the long-term utilisation of their assets.

The wearing course for the water and fire mains was a heavy duty asphalt where the mix was specifically designed and tested by Fulton Hogan for port applications. All fire mains and associated hydrants were welded to standards and the fire main was hydrostatically-tested.

A Sustainable Solution

The client’s existing asphalt pavement was worn down, due to fuel and hydraulic fluid spills from parked straddle carriers. The client required a commercial solution that would resist fuel and hydraulic fluids, as well as withstand the heavy channelised wheel load of the straddle carriers.

Fulton Hogan provided a solution called RigiPhalt®, which is a composite pavement, where open-grade asphalt is filled with a cement-based grout. The specially formulated cement grout provides a high degree of impermeability and resistance to fuel and hydraulic oils. The strength of this composite pavement material also provided resistance to rutting under the heavy loads of the containers’ corner castings.

Fulton Hogan’s vertically-integrated business meant we could obtain aggregates from our Tylden Quarry, plus asphalt produced from our Brooklyn plant and mobilise our own asphalt laying and construction crews, which ensured our stringent quality control over the end result.
